School Reconstruction Support Project in Parbat

Parbat, 15 April 2018 – SWAN and Shree Birendra Secondary School in Parbat district entered into the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reconstruct the primary block including the Early Childhood Development (ECD) Center of the school which was devastated by the Nepal Earthquake 2015.

Shree Birendra Secondary School is located at Pakuwa, ward number-11, Kushma Municipality of Parbat district. The school that currently has 22 teachers and 296 students (129 boys and 171 girls) was established in 1960 A.D. Despite the good number of students -teacher ratio, the classrooms, starting from Kindergarten to Grade-10 are in a very unsafe and poor condition. With most classrooms partially damaged by the quake, it’s hard to consider them safe and it could collapse at any time. To add to it, the school lacks proper toilets & drinking water facilities, playing and education materials for the school children.

Due to poor infrastructure, student migration and the number of school dropouts has been on a constant rise. In order to mitigate these consequences, the local stakeholders, school management committee, parents and local people are now seeking help from the local administrative units such as the ward and the municipality. Alongside, the school approached and requested SWAN to help rebuild the school to create a safer learning environment for their children.

Reconstruction of the school is the need of the hour given that it is the only secondary school in the village catchment area. This project is anticipated to complete by the July 2019 while this project is funded by an Inner wheel Distrikt-90 and SWAN Deutschland e.V. of Germany.
