SWAN begins Construction of Shree Dewal Basic School in remote village of Sarkegad, Humla

7 February, 2025, Humla – SWAN, with support from SWAN Deutschland e.V., has started rebuilding Shree Dewal Basic School in Tumcha village, Sarkegad Rural Municipality, Humla. The project aims to provide a safe and better learning environment for over 210 students in this remote area.

As part of the project, SWAN will build three new classrooms, gender-friendly toilets, and a safe drinking water facility. The organization will also provide furniture and school uniforms. To begin the work, SWAN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the school committee and the Sarkegad Rural Municipality in the first week of February.

A feasibility study conducted in September 2024 found that the school was in very poor condition. Classrooms from the Early Childhood Development (ECD) center to Grade 8 were unsafe, with a lack of furniture, toilets, drinking water, and learning materials. Due to these challenges, many parents were hesitant to send their children to school, contributing to low attendance and high dropout rates.

In response, the school management committee, parents, and locals requested help from the SWAN, Provincial and the local government. The Karnali Province recognized the urgency and provided funds to build three additional classrooms. SWAN actively partners with local and provincial governments to ensure the project’s long-term sustainability and lasting impact.

The project is expected to be completed within a year. This project will help provide children in Humla with quality education in a safe and comfortable environment.

“Our children have been studying in a school that is at risk of collapse, with limited teaching-learning resources and a lack of basic facilities like clean water, sanitation and furniture. Despite these challenges, we have always aspired to provide quality education in a safe learning environment. We are glad that SWAN and the Karnali Province have extended their immediate support to help rebuild our school, bringing hope to the remote and disadvantaged community of Humla.  Also, we continue to seek long-term support to transform education and create brighter futures for children in this region.”
