SWAN Successfully Completes Construction of Shree Dewal Basic School in Humla
December 2025 | Humla – SWAN (Social Welfare Association of Nepal) has successfully completed the construction of a three-room school building, including gender-friendly toilets and a handwashing facility at Shree Dewal Basic School in Tumcha Village, Ward No. 1, Sarkegad Rural Municipality, Humla District. The initiative marks an important milestone in improving access to safe and quality education for children in one of Nepal’s most remote regions.
Prior to the intervention, unsafe and deteriorating infrastructure posed major challenges for students at Shree Dewal Basic School. Classrooms were insufficient, and the lack of proper sanitation facilities created barriers to maintaining a safe and child-friendly learning environment. These conditions affected both student attendance and learning outcomes. The project aimed to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where children can learn and thrive with dignity and confidence.
On December 13, 2025, SWAN officially handed over the newly constructed facilities to the School Management Committee and the local community during a formal ceremony held at the school premises. The handover programme was attended by more than 200 community members, including local leaders, parents, teachers, women, and children, demonstrating strong ownership and community engagement.
The event was honored by the presence of Ms. Kalpana Karki, Programme Director of SWAN, and Mr. Arnold Horemann, Chairperson of SWAN Österreich. The programme concluded with a collective commitment from the School Management Committee and the community to take full ownership of the facilities and ensure their proper use, regular maintenance, and the promotion of quality education.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Karki emphasized that given the school’s remote location and ongoing needs, SWAN will continue to support the school through scholarships, teacher support, classroom management, learning materials, and mid-day meal programmes. These efforts aim to ensure holistic child development and sustain long-term educational progress in Humla.
The project was generously funded by SWAN Deutschland e.V., and implemented in close coordination with the local Municipality Office and the Social Development Office, Surkhet, Karnali Province.
