From September 26 to 28, 2024, heavy rains triggered catastrophic floods and landslides, claiming over 250 lives across Nepal. Countless homes, roads, bridges, school buildings and vital water systems were destroyed. The floods affected almost 50 districts, with the hardest hit area reported in Kavrepalanchok, Sindhuli and Lalitpur.
Flood impact on Panauti Municipality, Kavrepalanchok
The needs assessment revealed that the recent floods caused extensive damages in settlements, schools, health facilities, roads and bridges. The education sector was one of the major areas disrupted by the floods and landslides in late September. There are 34 community schools with a total of 12,742 students including 5,933 are girls and 6,809 are boys. Likewise, there are 22 private boarding schools with a total of 12,714 students including 5,933 girls and 6,781 boys.

We are working closely with local government to analyse the situation and ensure that our interventions are timely, effective, and sustainable. This project focuses on the direct engagement of the disaster-affected schools, school children and Panauti municipality while the main goal is to provide an access to continue their education in an environment that fosters dignity and confidence. Therefore, this project ensures benefits that extend beyond the immediate recovery phase, laying the foundation for long-term recovery and support.
