NEPAL FLASH FLOOD EMERGENCY

Catastrophic Flash Floods Strike Nepal

Communities need your support — right now.

WHAT HAPPENED ?

On 26 August 2026, a glacial collapse triggered a debris flow and a sudden surge of water into the Lhende–Bhote Koshi river system. The resulting flash flood tore through Rasuwa and swept downstream along the Trishuli River corridor, devastating communities in Nuwakot and Dhading.

As of 31 August 2026, the death toll has climbed past 900, with several thousand people still missing or unaccounted for. Thousands of families have been displaced, and homes, livelihoods and essential infrastructure lie in ruins.

The full scale of the humanitarian impact is still unfolding.

Widespread destruction in Rasuwa district and downstream in Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan.

WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE GROUND?

Access to the worst-affected areas remains difficult, and needs are urgent. Families who have lost their homes and belongings need immediate assistance, while damaged water and sanitation systems are raising the risk of disease outbreaks. Children, women, older people and people with disabilities face heightened risks and added barriers to essential services.

The Government of Nepal and humanitarian organizations are already on the ground, leading search-and-rescue operations and delivering emergency relief and medical care. But the scale of the disaster means continued support is urgently needed.

OUR APPROACH:

SWAN is working closely with local authorities, communities, humanitarian partners and other stakeholders to ensure support is needs-based, well-coordinated and reaches those who need it most.

IMMEDIATE SUPPORT:

  • Distribution of food, clothing, and essential relief items.
  • Provision of temporary shelter and non-food items.
  • Distribution of dignity and hygiene kits to women, girls, and vulnerable groups.
  • Provision of WASH supplies to affected communities.
  • Support to displaced people in holding centers.
  • Targeted support for children, women, adolescent girls, older people, and other vulnerable groups.
  • Rapid assessment and coordination with local government and humanitarian partners

LONG-TERM RECOVERY SUPPORT:

As the emergency phase eases, SWAN will help affected communities recover, rebuild and grow more resilient — across our core focus areas of education, health, livelihoods and WASH. Our longer-term response includes:

  • Restoring damaged schools and learning spaces
  • Rehabilitating water and sanitation facilities
  • Supporting livelihood recovery for affected households
  • Building climate-resilient livelihoods and infrastructure
  • Helping children and families return to safe, stable and dignified living conditions
