July 30, 2026,  Achham: SWAN has expanded its climate-smart agriculture support in Ramaroshan Rural Municipality, Achham, from 22 farmers in Ward No. 2 to 10 additional farmers in Ward No. 3. Through training, greenhouses, farming inputs, and fruit saplings, SWAN is helping farmers improve production, diversify income, and strengthen food security.

 

Growing Resilient Livelihoods Through Climate-Smart Farming in Achham

In June, the Chabmbala Farmers’ Group, a new group of 14 farmers in Ward No. 3, was formed with SWAN’s support. In collaboration with the Local Agriculture and Livestock Office in Mangalsen, SWAN organized a three-day training on seasonal and off-season vegetable farming.

The training combined theory and practical learning on improved cultivation techniques, nursery management, integrated pest management, soil fertility, irrigation, mulching, plastic-tunnel construction, organic fertilizer preparation, market management, fruit cultivation, and other climate-smart farming practices. The training was facilitated by Mr. Dipesh Kathayat from the Agriculture Office under Nepal’s National Agriculture Modernization Programme.

To put the learning into practice, SWAN also supported farmers with 10 greenhouses (plastic tunnels) along with seeds, seed trays, polybags, fertilizers, plastic sheeting, and climate-smart agricultural materials such as pheromone traps, cue-lure traps, and yellow sticky traps. These combined supports are enabling farmers to apply improved farming techniques, increase production, and explore more sustainable sources of household income.

 

Diversifying Income Through Fruit Farming

SWAN further supported farmers in July by distributing 230 orange and lemon saplings to 23 farmers in Ward No. 3 of Ramaroshan Rural Municipality, Achham.

The fruit farming support is creating opportunities for farmers to diversify their agricultural production and develop long-term, climate-suitable income sources alongside vegetable farming. Beneficiaries have already planted the saplings on their farmland and are showing strong interest in developing fruit orchards.

Together, these interventions are helping farmers strengthen food security, diversify household income, and build more resilient agricultural livelihoods suited to the local context of Achham.

 

As a cross-cutting component of SWAN’s Maternal and Child Health Project in Achham and Bajura, the livelihood interventions have generated strong community participation and interest. To date, 61 farmers across Achham and Bajura have directly benefited from livelihood support, creating a stronger foundation for sustainable and diversified household livelihoods.
